Lower School

First Grade

A first-grade classroom resembles a hive of busy bees. Scan the room and you’re likely to see children playing word games with a partner, others participating in a small-group workshop with the teacher, and some quietly engrossed in a good book. It’s a typical tableau based on a thoughtful curriculum that balances rigor, reason, reflection, respect, and responsibility.

This year, your child will delve deep into research projects that are interdisciplinary mashups of language arts, science, art, library, and even Bible class. He will create an anthology of poetry and apply math to real-world situations like telling time and counting money. She will consider what she might do if she was President, weighing the benefits and consequences of her decisions. Read-aloud books (not to mention squabbles on the playground) will afford opportunities for your child to absorb important character lessons. Inspired by Peg + Cat: The Race Car Problem, he will collaborate with peers in our Maker Space to build a car out of recycled materials. With so many opportunities to make choices, she will have more agency over her decisions…and not all will go smoothly! These are valuable experiences, too, because they will allow your first grader to forge the important life skills of resilience and self-awareness. And she will be ready for all that comes next.
