Curious Scientists
Science is central to our lives, and never more than today. Ten of the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals relate directly to science, like Zero Hunger, Good Health, and Clean Water. To ensure a high-quality science education, ROBS has turned to Next Generation Science Standards for what our students should know and be able to do.
What’s new about these standards is their emphasis on higher order thinking skills, rather than rote memorization of googleable facts. From there, it’s up to our innovative curriculum team to design lessons with a Kindergartener’s sense of wonder in mind. Your Kindergartener will think deeply about scientific topics as varied as nocturnal animals, extreme weather, life under the sea, and force and motion. She will explore her five senses through “feely bags” filled with objects like a shell or a spoon; “smell jars” filled with familiar scents like vanilla and lemon juice; “sound jars” filled with pennies or rice; and tools to compensate for the absence of a sense like braille and sign language. He won’t learn about friction by looking at a worksheet; he’ll witness it by blowing through a straw to propel a ball across the carpet and the tile floor. We hope your child’s early scientific experiences will ignite a lifetime of curiosity about the world around him. He may even be inspired to solve one of Earth’s most pressing scientific challenges.
