Global Citizens
As the world of your first grader expands, Social Studies lessons move beyond family and classroom. Your child will learn about neighborhoods and cities, community leaders and community helpers. She will discover how people marshal their talents in different jobs to make society better—people like Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Edison, but also like her. Weekly class jobs like teacher helper, table captain, classroom messenger, and technology helper give every first grader real-world experience in how they can make their community better, too.
Your child will study maps and practice skills like how to read the key and compass rose. He will reflect on and recognize family traditions that are meaningful to him. Children will learn about the qualities of good citizens and ponder what it takes to be a good neighbor. She will even imagine herself in the White House and will compose a platform of goals for her Presidency. Your first grader is beginning to dream big, and we are cheering her on.
