Master Mathematicians
Fifth grade math blends the best of Everyday Mathematics, which is the core of our Lower School mathematics program, with the strengths of other math curricula. As concepts build on one another, your child will make her own connections of understanding and gain confidence in using mathematics to solve real-world problems.
Spiraling the math curriculum will give your child solid foundation skills in geometry, multiplication and division, measurement, decimals and fractions, percent and probability, interpreting data, integers, exponents, negative numbers, predicting outcomes, and algebraic reasoning. Games like “Number Sense Madness”—where students learn different Number Sense rules that reinforce basic number operations—help students build confidence in their mathematical abilities while having fun. Students also enjoy open-ended activities that allow them to create new application problems and then solve them. For example, the Fractions Math Recipe Project requires students to use fractional operations to halve and double a favorite family recipe. Students also find joy in Weekly Challenge competitions featuring six ambitious math problems, as well as monthly Continental Mathematics League competitions from November to March.
