Master Mathmaticians
Math is a universal language. The familiar Arabic numbers we use can be understood by someone in another hemisphere, and anywhere on Earth, 2 + 2 = 4. The universality of math is one of the many things that makes it such a powerful tool and, indeed, an essential life skill. Your second grader’s math skills will grow in leaps and bounds this year. She will learn strategies to solve basic math facts and how to exchange coins to make change. He will discover beautiful patterns in math as he practices skip counting by twos, fives, and tens.
She will tackle more advanced skills like multiplication, division, fractions, and decimals. Child-centric challenges and games like Rummikub and Doodle Dice will keep him on his toes. Second graders will collect and interpret data and learn how tools such as bar charts can be used to convey information in a more accessible way. Mathematical modeling continues as second graders grow in their ability to represent concepts in multiple ways. Your child will also begin to more deeply explore open-ended number stories, developing and strengthening her abilities to analyze information, formulate a plan, and explain her reasoning. In years to come, whether he lands in Seattle, Stockholm, or Sao Paulo, the math skills your second grader is developing now will serve him well.
