Buenos Amigos
Common courtesy is a recurring theme of the second-grade year, even in Spanish class. Your child will begin the year learning the language of greetings. During Hispanic Heritage Month, your child will research a topic about Mexico—perhaps food, the national flag, or someone famous—and present his project to his class. Some Spanish lessons mirror our Science curriculum, and your child will acquire vocabulary about simple machines.
Taking a virtual trip to Oaxaca will enable your child to describe people, buildings, streets, and transportation. Just for fun, she will study the poem “La Ardilla,” about a child’s interaction with a busy squirrel. For their year-end capstone project, second graders will showcase their familiarity with food and nutrition by filling a plate and describing it their peers. As your child adds to his knowledge of Spanish three times a week, he may start participating when he hears Spanish spoken in real-life situations. And that’s what it’s all about!
